Join the Libraries

Our library membership is free and everyone is welcome at Upper Hutt Libraries.

Click on the tabs below to find out more about membership options and to fill in an online registration form, then visit one of our library branches to finalise your registration and to pick up your Library Card.

Get a Library Card – Adult (over 16)

Fill in our online registration form, then visit one of our branches to collect your Library Card.

Please bring:

  • Photo ID (e.g. driver licence, passport)

Get a Library Card – Child (under 16)

Fill in our online registration form, then visit one of our branches to collect your Library Card.

Please bring:

  • ID (showing the name of your parent/guardian and signature)
  • your parent/guardian with you

If you're visiting the Library without a parent/guardian, you can sign up for a Junior Starter card. This allows you to check out two (2) books at a time, to use our free computers (Chromebooks), and to access our Digital Library.

Digital membership

You can sign up for a digital membership to access only our Digital Library.

Fill in our online registration form – if you can't come into one of our branches to collecy your Library Card, please contact us.

Joining the Library without ID

If you don't have photo ID, we offer a restricted membership.

This membership option lets you borrow up to two (2) books, and gives you full access to our Digital Library as well as other library services.

Where can I use my Library Card?

You can use your Library Card here:

  • Central Library,
  • Pinehaven Library,
  • Pūrehurehu (our library bus),
  • Mangaroa (our mobile EV van), and
  • our Digital Library.

Membership conditions

As a member of Upper Hutt Libraries (also refer to here as 'Libraries'), you agree to the following:

  • To return all items in good condition and on time.

  • To pay any damaged or lost charges.

  • To notify the Libraries of any change of address, phone number or email address.

  • To notify the Libraries immediately if your card is lost or stolen.

  • From time to time, the Libraries may contact you with information on its products and services.

  • To abide by the Libraries' Code of Conduct. As a parent/guardian, you are required to take full responsibility for a child’s use of the Libraries. 

  • You allow your personal information to be used in accordance with the Upper Hutt City Council’s Privacy Statement, which will enable access to library services and may be provided to a debt collection agency who acts on behalf of the Upper Hutt City Council in the event that attempts to settle outstanding charges are unsuccessful.

How many items can I borrow?

Borrowing is unlimited on full memberships.

Junior Starter and adult restricted memberships can borrow up to two (2) items at a time.

What can I borrow at Upper Hutt Libraries?
