What's on for adults

For our community, our libraries have become a place to learn something new, share skills, get practical support, or simply enjoy spending time with others who share similar interests.

Our adult programmes include community support sessions, discussion and interest groups, creative workshops, and digital learning opportunities, many of which run regularly and are free to attend.

Whether you're looking for information, connection, or a reason to step out of the house and into something new, these programmes offer easy ways to take part and feel involved over time.

Information and support

Access free information and support services for a wide range of topics. These sessions are delivered by government departments, community groups, or local experts in their fields.

Justice of the Peace

We have JPs available to witness signatures, help with applications, and more. No bookings or appointments needed.

Genealogy

One-on-one research help and advice on tracing your family history with resources like Ancestry and other databases.

Community Law

Free legal advice and support, including information about legal aid and ongoing assistance. Hosted by Community Law Hutt Valley and Wellington.

IRD Mobile Office

Get information, advice, and help with IRD services like income tax payments, child support, Working for Families and KiwiSaver. Bookings required.

UHub

UHub brings together services, resources, and professionals to support local children and their families.

Meet the Mayor and Councillors

Mayor Peri Zee, alongside other local Councillors, hosts a monthly drop-in session where you can share thoughts, concerns, and ideas for Upper Hutt and the community.

Book clubs and discussion groups

We love books and even love it more when our community come together to have lively debates about their favourite books, so drop into Central Library for some lively discussions.

Do you enjoy reading poetry and discovering new poems? Join this friendly conversation club and meet other poetry fans.

Digital learning and tech help

Apps, smartphones, online services. Learn how to use digital devices and navigate your way online with ease and confidence.

Better Digital Futures

Learn how to use email, online services, and mobile devices with confidence and ease. Register your interest for our free in-person courses for older adults and seniors (ages 65 plus).

Seniortech Skills Upper Hutt

Hands-on training on how to use smartphones, tablets, and online services. Free learning sessions, running weekly.

Writing groups

There are two writing groups which meet regularly at Central Library. Share your creative process with others, be inspired, and let the words flow together.

It's Write Easy

Learn how to record and preserve your memories for your family, friends, and future generations. Short-form, autobiographical writing.

Upper Hutt Writes

Want to bounce story ideas, talk plot, chat characters? Come along and meet other local writers to share tips and tricks, and get inspired.

Social groups

We love that these social groups are using our Central Library for their regular catch-up. When you are a mum or a caregiver with a new born, or a senior looking to keep active, just come along.

Plunket Parents Group

Meet other parents in a relaxed, supportive space to connect and share. Perfect for families with babies aged 0 to 6 months.

Social Drama for Seniors

Group improvisation and storytelling fun to keep the mind active and creative. No lines to learn, just come along and enjoy a good time together.

Craft and music

We are a community space and definitely love it when our community comes together at Central Library for their creative projects. Whether you are a beginner or getting back into these, all are welcome.

UH Ukes

Ukulele class for both beginners and advanced players. Learn how to play, discover new tunes, and enjoy making music in a friendly group environment. All welcome.

Paper Craft Creations

Colouring, card making and scrapbooking. Meet other locals who enjoy crafts and share your creative hobby skills.

Crafting Threads of Aroha

Needles, yarn, and fabric at the ready! Join our crafters and make items for charities and groups to support locals in need.

History and genealogy groups

For our community who wants to learn to dig deeper into their roots or learn about the history of Upper Hutt, you are invited to come along to share and learn.
