Message from Mike Ryan, Director of Community Services:
We regret to inform our Upper Hutt community that Drag Storytots on Thursday, 27 June will not be going ahead. We will not be rescheduling this event as it was the last of the series of events in our “Out on the Shelves” programme.
After receiving feedback on social media, during in-person meetings and from emails and phone calls, we are unable to ensure a safe and welcoming environment for those who had planned to attend this event. This decision is not something we take lightly and we understand that this may be disappointing to some. The safety of our tamariki, community and staff is our priority. Our library’s users have the right to attend events in a safe, welcoming, and inclusive environment.
Upper Hutt prides itself on inclusivity and diversity and the Council is committed to fostering an environment where all individuals feel safe and welcome.
June is “Out on the Shelves” month across libraries and schools in Aotearoa. Upper Hutt Libraries has celebrated “Out on the Shelves” for several years as part of our regular lineup of diverse programmes and events.
We are committed to running events in support of our diverse community in the future.
