Out on the Shelves: Celebrating Diversity in Literature

Attention book lovers of all great literature! This June the library is proud to be part of the upcoming nationwide "Out on the Shelves" celebration.
“Out on the Shelves” is dedicated to promoting LGBTQ+ literature and authors and is designed to connect rainbow young people with the stories that represent them. Whether you identify as LGBTQ+, are simply an ally or just love good books with great storylines, “Out on the Shelves” is designed to celebrate diversity, foster inclusivity, and inspire a love of reading.
To kick things off this June, we've lined up events to celebrate all things LGBTQ+ literature. We have also curated a fantastic book display showcasing a wide range of LGBTQ+ literature. From classic works to contemporary fiction, non-fiction, memoirs, and more, there's something for everyone to enjoy. So why not swing by the library and browse our collection? Here are some of the exciting "Out on the Shelves" events to look forward to in the month of June.
Book Swap and Afternoon Tea
Saturday 10 June | 2.30PM – 3.30PM | Pinehaven Library
We're also hosting a book swap event where you can trade in your gently used books for new reads. It's a great way to refresh your personal library while also giving someone else the chance to discover a new author or genre, and meeting others in the LGBTQIA+ community.
Teen Art and Craft Club
Wednesday 14 June | 4.00PM - 5:00PM | Central Library
Join us for an extra session of our Teen Art and Craft Club to make pride badges! All materials supplied, just bring your ideas.
Speed Date with a Book
Saturday 17 June | 2.00PM – 3.00PM | Central Library
Always wanted to judge a book by its cover? For those of you looking for something a little more adventurous, we've got just the thing. Our "Speed Date with a Book" event will give you the chance to sample a range of LGBTQ+ books in a fun, fast-paced setting. It's a great way to discover new authors and titles while connecting with like-minded readers.
Queer Quiz
Saturday 24 June | 2.00PM – 3.30PM | Central Library
And finally, we're thrilled to announce our queer trivia quiz. Test your knowledge of LGBTQ+ movies and drama, culture, literature, and more for the chance to win some fantastic prizes. It's a fun and educational way to celebrate "Out on the Shelves" and learn more about the LGBTQ+ community.
Before we go, during the month of June, we will feature at least one story with LGBTQIA* themes at all of our regular StoryTots sessions! Join us for an introduction to books and learning through story, song and rhyme! Develop early literacy skills in your little one and socialise with other tamariki and their whānau.
